OCD & Obsessive Thinking

Intrusive thoughts, compulsions and the rituals built to quiet them.

OCD is not tidiness. It is an intrusive thought that feels unbearable until a ritual neutralizes it — and the ritual works just well enough to keep the cycle running. Most people carry it privately for years because the content of the thoughts feels shameful to say out loud. It is not a character flaw, and it responds to treatment.

How care usually works

Evaluation separates OCD from generalized anxiety, tic disorders and trauma, since the treatment differs. Medication for OCD is usually dosed higher and given longer to work than for depression, and I explain that timeline up front so a working plan is not abandoned early. Where exposure-based therapy is indicated, I coordinate with a therapist while I manage the medication side.

What we focus on

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
  • SSRI trials at OCD-appropriate dosing and duration
  • Clear timelines so trials aren't stopped too soon
  • Coordination with an ERP therapist when you have one
